The finished result: How to Draw an Angel

This cartoon angel is about as simple as a Christmas drawing gets, which is the point. Art for Kids Hub made the lesson for young artists, and you can watch a dad draw it side by side with his five-year-old son. You start with a circle, add big eyes and a smile, give her a dress, wings and a halo, then fill the sky with stars. It takes about ten minutes, coloring included.

You need a black marker, paper and colored pencils. That is the whole list.

An easy angel drawing built from simple shapes

Every part of this angel is a shape a preschooler already knows. The head is a circle. The eyes are circles. The dress is two curves and a line. The hands are tiny circles on the end of a stick. Even the wings are one straight line and a row of bumps. Kids who can draw a circle can finish the whole drawing without help.

The order matters more than the shapes. Face first, then body, then hair, then wings. Drawing the hair after the body lets the hair lines run down into the dress, so it reads like a hood or long hair framing her face.

Markers, paper and coloring supplies

A fine point black permanent marker gives you the bold outline in the video. Plain printer paper is fine for practice, but heavier sketch paper holds up better when kids press hard with colored pencils. The angels here get a yellow halo and stars, peach skin, pink cheeks and blond hair. Crayons or washable markers work too. At the end, the outline gets traced again to make it extra thick, which makes the angel pop off the page.

Angel drawing ideas and variations

  • Night sky. Cut the finished angel out and glue her onto black construction paper. The video suggests this, and the yellow stars glow against it.
  • Flapping wings. Add short motion lines next to each wing tip so it looks like she is flying.
  • Different hair. Swap the rainbow line for curly hair, braids or a short bob. Give her any hair color you like.
  • A choir. Draw three small angels in a row with open mouths for singing.

Christmas cards, tree toppers and classroom art

A small angel makes a sweet Christmas card front or a paper tree topper. Cut her out, tape her to a straw and slide it over the top branch. Classrooms can line a hallway with a whole sky of angels. Pair her with a Christmas tree drawing or a Santa drawing for a full holiday scene, and add a few snowflakes in place of stars. For something to hang, see homemade Christmas ornaments.

Common problems

  • The head came out squished. That is fine. A lumpy circle gives the angel more personality.
  • One wing is huge. Wings do not need to match. Make the second one close in size and move on.
  • The halo looks like a hat. Leave a gap between the halo and the head so it floats.
  • No room for the wings. Start the head a little smaller and in the center of the page. The wings need space on both sides.

Quick answer

Draw a cute cartoon angel in 10 easy steps: big eyes, a bell dress, bumpy wings, a halo and stars, then color her in. An easy project: about 20 minutes. Materials cost about $5 to $10. You need 5 things, including drawing paper or sketch pad, colored pencils and black construction paper. The 10 steps start with draw the Angel's Round Head and Big Eyes, add the Angel's Big Smile and Cheeks and draw the Angel's Bell-Shaped Dress.

Step-by-step guide

10 steps, about 7 minutes. Tap a picture to jump to that step. Your progress saves automatically.

Tick each step off as you go.

  1. Step 1: Draw the Angel's Round Head and Big Eyes

    Watch this step · 1:32

Draw a circle in the middle of your paper for the angel's head. It does not have to be round. A squished circle is fine. Inside it, draw two big circles side by side for her eyes. Add a tiny circle near the top of each eye for the shine, plus a smaller one at the bottom. Color the eyes in with your marker but leave those little circles white.

    Tip:

Keep the eyes close together and low in the circle. That makes the face look cute instead of surprised.

  2. Step 2: Add the Angel's Big Smile and Cheeks

    Watch this step · 2:02

She is an angel, so she is happy. Draw a big curved smile under the eyes that stretches almost all the way across her face. Make it really big. Then draw a small circle at each end of the smile for her cheeks. Those little circles get colored pink later, so leave them empty for now. The face is done.

    Tip:

Start the smile near one side of the head and swing across in one stroke. Slow lines get wobbly.

    Back to all steps

  3. Step 3: Draw the Angel's Bell-Shaped Dress

    Watch this step · 2:26

Draw a curved line coming down out of one side of the head. It bends outward like the edge of a skirt. Draw a matching curve down the other side. Now connect the bottoms of the two curves with a line across. You end up with a bell shape under the head. That is the angel's dress, and it is also her whole body.

    Tip:

Let the curves flare out at the bottom. A wide hem makes the dress look like it is floating.

    Back to all steps

  4. Step 4: Draw the Angel's Arms and Circle Hands

    Watch this step · 2:51

Draw a short line coming out of the side of the dress for one arm. Put a small circle on the end for her hand. That is the easiest way to draw a hand. On the other side, draw a line coming down inside the dress for the second arm, with another little circle at the bottom. Now she has two little hands.

    Tip:

Arms can point any way you want. Try one arm waving up for a different pose.

    Back to all steps

  5. Step 5: Draw the Angel's Legs and Oval Feet

    Watch this step · 3:15

Draw two short lines coming out of the bottom of the dress for her legs. Leave a little space between them. Then draw a small oval at the bottom of each leg for her feet. Turn the ovals slightly outward so the feet point away from each other. The whole body is finished now, and she already looks like a little person.

    Tip:

Keep the legs short. Long legs make the angel look like she is standing instead of flying.

    Back to all steps

  6. Step 6: Draw the Angel's Hair Over Her Head

    Watch this step · 3:46

Right now she looks a little bald. Draw a big upside-down U, like a rainbow, that goes over the top of her head with a small gap all around. Then draw a line from each end of the rainbow down into the dress. That connects the hair to her body, so it looks like long hair or a hood framing her face.

    Tip:

Leave a gap between the hair line and the head circle. That gap becomes the hair when you color.

    Back to all steps

  7. Step 7: Draw the Angel's Two Bumpy Wings

    Watch this step · 4:48

Draw a diagonal line coming up and out from the side of her head. Then draw a bumpy line from the top of it back down to the dress. Little bump, big bump, little bump, big bump, all the way down. That is one wing. Do the same on the other side. Make the wings big. One can be a little smaller and that is okay.

    Tip:

Big bumps at the top and small ones near the dress make the wings look like feathers.

    Back to all steps

  8. Step 8: Draw the Angel's Halo Above Her Head

    Watch this step · 5:00

What is she missing? Her halo. Draw a flat, squashed oval floating above her head. It looks like a ring seen from the side. Leave some white space between the halo and her hair so it looks like it hovers. This is the one detail that tells everyone she is an angel, so do not skip it.

    Tip:

Keep the halo thin and wide. A tall oval looks like a hat.

    Back to all steps

  9. Step 9: Draw Stars Around the Angel

    Watch this step · 5:30

She is flying up in the sky, so it is night time. Draw five-point stars all around her. Put some above her halo, some beside her wings and a few near her feet. Big ones, small ones, it does not matter. If you have not drawn a star before, this is a great place to practice, because a dozen of them fill the page.

    Tip:

Draw a star as one continuous zigzag. Up, down, across, over and back to the start.

    Back to all steps

  10. Step 10: Color the Angel With Colored Pencils

    Watch this step · 5:48

Put the markers away and grab colored pencils. Color the halo and stars yellow, the face peach, the cheeks pink and the hair any color you like. You can leave the dress and wings white. Trace the outline again with your marker to make it thick, and add little lines by the wings so they look like they are flapping.

    Tip:

Pause the video to match the colors, or make up your own. It is your angel.
