Slime is one of those projects that looks foolproof until you are elbow-deep in a bowl of glue wondering why yours has turned into a rubber ball. The recipe itself is three ingredients. Getting the texture right is the actual skill.

A note on borax

This recipe uses a borax activator, which is the traditional method and the one that gives the glossiest, stretchiest result. Borax is a laundry booster, not a food product. Make the activator yourself rather than letting children mix it, label the bottle so nobody drinks it, and wash hands after playing. If you would rather skip it entirely, liquid starch or saline solution with baking soda both work as substitutes - the glue and lotion steps stay identical.

What decides the texture

Two variables do almost all the work. The amount of activator controls whether the slime is sticky or rubbery, and the lotion controls how far it stretches before it tears. Add activator a splash at a time and you can always add more. Dump it in and there is no going back.
