The finished result: How to Draw a Deer

This cartoon deer is one of the friendliest animals you can draw. It comes from Art for Kids Hub, where a dad and his daughter draw side by side, and it is built from shapes kids already know: circles, a U, two leaves and a few J curves. You start with the big shiny eyes, build the head and ears around them, add a body with four legs, then finish with spots and color.

You need a black marker, paper and something to color with. Plan on about ten minutes, plus coloring time.

Drawing a baby deer (fawn) instead of a grown deer

A fawn is the easiest kind of deer to draw. Its head is big, its legs are short and it has no antlers to wrestle with. The white spots on its back are what tell people it is a baby deer and not a puppy or a fox. Skip them and the drawing loses its whole identity.

Looking for a deer with antlers for Christmas? That is a different drawing. Our how to draw a reindeer guide covers the antlers and red nose.

Why the eyes come first

Starting with the eyes sounds backwards. It works because the eyes set the size of everything else. Draw them big and on the left half of the page, and you leave room for the body on the right. Start with the outline of the head and many kids run out of paper before they reach the back legs.

Paper, markers and coloring supplies

Printer paper is fine for practice. For a drawing you want to keep, use a heavier sketch pad so markers do not bleed through. A fine point black permanent marker gives the bold outline you see in the video. The finished fawns are colored with colored pencils in two browns, a light tan for the face patches and belly, and black for the hooves. Washable markers are faster for small kids.

Leave the spots and the shine in the eyes white. White paper does that job better than any white pencil.

Ways to change your deer

  • Add eyelashes for a girl fawn. The video calls it rule number one.
  • Shade the back legs a darker brown so they sit behind the front legs.
  • Give it a meadow with grass, flowers or a butterfly on its nose.
  • In winter, draw snowflakes around it and a scarf on its neck.
  • Draw a mother deer beside it. Use the same steps, with smaller eyes, a longer neck and no spots.

Deer and horses are built the same way, so this drawing is good practice for how to draw a horse. The big ears and pointy face also carry over to how to draw a fox.

Common deer drawing problems

  • The ears do not match. Draw one ear, then watch how high it goes before you draw the second. Aim for the same height.
  • The legs look flat. Make the two lines of each leg closer at the top and wider at the bottom.
  • It looks like a dog. Add the spots and the little upturned tail. Those two details say deer.
  • The body floats. Rest all four hooves on the same imaginary ground line.

Quick answer

Draw a cute baby deer in 10 easy steps: shiny eyes, leaf ears, short legs and white fawn spots, then color it brown. An easy project: about 30 minutes. You need 4 things, including colored pencils or washable markers, black fine point permanent marker and pencil and eraser. The 10 steps start with draw the Baby Deer's Big Shiny Eyes, draw the Deer Head, Nose and Mouth and draw the Deer's Big Leaf-Shaped Ears.

Step-by-step guide

10 steps, about 10 minutes. Tap a picture to jump to that step. Your progress saves automatically.

Tick each step off as you go.

  1. Step 1: Draw the Baby Deer's Big Shiny Eyes

    Watch this step · 1:12

On the left side of your page, draw two big circles side by side. Keep them on the left so the deer's body has room on the right later. Inside each eye, draw a small circle near the top right and an even smaller one near the bottom left. Color in the rest of each eye black and leave those two little circles white. That white shine makes the eyes look wet and cute.

    Tip:

Draw the eyes bigger than feels right. Big eyes are what make a cartoon fawn look young.

  2. Step 2: Draw the Deer Head, Nose and Mouth

    Watch this step · 2:06

Start beside the first eye and draw a U shape that dips down below both eyes and comes back up on the other side. That is the bottom of the deer's head. Between the eyes and right under them, draw a small oval nose and color it in. Under the nose, draw a J and a backwards J for the mouth. Then draw a small circle around the nose and mouth for the muzzle.

    Tip:

Keep the muzzle circle small. A big one makes the face look like a dog.

  3. Step 3: Draw the Deer's Big Leaf-Shaped Ears

    Watch this step · 2:46

Deer have big ears, so go bold. From the top of the U on one side, draw a long leaf shape that goes up and out to a point, then comes back down. Do the same on the other side. Try to make both ears reach the same height. They stick out to the sides at an angle, almost like airplane wings, which gives the fawn that alert look.

    Tip:

Pause after the first ear and check its height before you draw the second one.

    Back to all steps

  4. Step 4: Draw the Top of the Deer Head and Inner Ears

    Watch this step · 3:40

Connect the two ears with a big curve over the top of the head. Now add the inside of each ear. At the bottom of the ear, draw a short zigzag with about three bumps for fur. From the top of that zigzag, draw a line that follows the outer ear shape up to the tip and back down. The inner ear line makes the ears look deep instead of flat.

    Tip:

Leave a small gap between the inner and outer ear lines so you can color the inside a lighter shade.

    Back to all steps

  5. Step 5: Draw the Patches Around the Deer's Eyes

    Watch this step · 4:22

Starting above one eye, draw a rounded shape that goes around the outside of the eye and comes down to touch the nose. Come back up around the inside of the eye and connect at the top. Repeat on the other side. These patches will be colored a lighter tan later, and they make the eyes pop out of the face.

    Tip:

Let the patch lines touch the nose. That ties the face together.

    Back to all steps

  6. Step 6: Draw the Deer's Front Legs and Chest

    Watch this step · 5:24

Under the nose, draw a line straight down for the first front leg. Draw a second line beside it, closer at the top and wider at the bottom, and connect them with a U for the foot. Draw a J-shaped line from the chin curving down for the chest. Then add the second front leg behind the first with another line and a curved foot. Two overlapping legs make the deer look 3D.

    Tip:

Keep the legs short and chunky. Long skinny legs make a baby deer look grown up.

    Back to all steps

  7. Step 7: Draw the Deer's Body and Back Legs

    Watch this step · 7:20

From the top of the front leg, draw a short line back for the belly. Draw the first back leg with a bend in it, like a horse leg. Draw a big curve for the back and rump that comes around and stops near that bend. Add the back of the leg with a bump and a line down, and close the foot with a U. Draw the last back leg peeking out behind, and a curve under the chest for the belly.

    Tip:

Pause the video here if you need to. This is the trickiest part of the deer.

    Back to all steps

  8. Step 8: Color the Deer Hooves and Draw the Tail

    Watch this step · 7:58

Near the bottom of each leg, draw a small curve across. That marks off the hoof. Color each hoof solid black. On the back of the deer, draw a short tail that looks a lot like the ears: a curve that goes up, then a bigger curve that comes back down. It sticks up like a bunny tail. Add one small line on the back for the hip.

    Tip:

Color the hooves before the spots. Black ink near wet spots can smear.

    Back to all steps

  9. Step 9: Draw the White Spots on the Baby Deer

    Watch this step · 8:32

The spots are what turn this into a baby deer. Draw small ovals across the back and the top of the hip. You can draw a handful or a whole bunch. Real fawns have rows of them, so there is no wrong number. Keep them small and leave them white when you color. Now the line drawing is done.

    Tip:

Cluster the spots along the back. Spots on the legs or belly look more like a cow.

    Back to all steps

  10. Step 10: Color the Baby Deer Brown and Tan

    Watch this step · 8:50

Color the head, ears, body and legs medium brown. Use a light tan for the eye patches, the muzzle, the inside of the ears and the chest. Leave the spots, the eye shine and the white of the tail uncolored. Press harder with a darker brown on the back legs so they look farther away. A small white highlight on each hoof makes them shiny.

    Tip:

Color the light tan areas first. It is easier to go darker than to fix a brown smudge.
