The finished result: How to Draw a Christmas Stocking

This Christmas stocking drawing comes from Art for Kids Hub, where Rob and his son draw side by side. You start with a fluffy cuff, add the sock shape below it, then give the heel and toe little stitched patches. It takes about four minutes. Every line is a bump, a straight line or a curve, so it works for kids as young as four.

Grab a black marker and a sheet of paper. You color it at the end.

Why the bumpy cuff makes this stocking drawing work

The cuff is the part people recognize. A smooth rectangle on top looks like a sock. A bumpy cloud edge looks like fur trim, and that says Christmas stocking right away. Mix big bumps and little bumps. Wobbly is good here.

The foot is the trickiest line. Think of it as a big sideways U. You go out, curl around and come back up to meet the other side. If yours comes out short or fat, that is fine. Real stockings come in every shape.

Markers, paper and coloring supplies

A fine point black permanent marker gives the bold outline. Plain printer paper is fine for practice, but a heavier drawing pad stops the ink from bleeding through and holds up to heavy coloring. Nervous drawers can sketch in pencil first and trace over it.

The video colors with oil pastels. Colored pencils, crayons or markers work too. Rob also adds light blue shading on the white cuff and a soft shadow around the outside to make the stocking look 3D. Skip that if you want to keep it easy.

Christmas stocking decoration ideas

  • Write a name across the white cuff, like a real hanging stocking.
  • Draw toys poking out of the top: a candy cane, a wrapped present or a tiny reindeer.
  • Swap the colors. Green sock with red patches, or stripes all the way down.
  • Add snowflakes, stars or polka dots on the red part.
  • Draw a hanging loop at the top corner of the cuff.

Cards, classroom walls and gift tags

Cut the finished stocking out and you have a holiday decoration. Tape a second paper stocking behind it, leave the top open, and it turns into a little pocket for a note or candy. A row of stockings with each kid's name makes a fun classroom wall. Small ones make good gift tags and card fronts. Pair it with a Santa drawing for a full scene. Christmas stocking drawing ideas to try next

Draw three stockings in a row hanging from a fireplace mantel. Or draw a Christmas tree beside one stocking for a holiday card.

Common problems and quick fixes

  • The cuff looks like a cloud. Keep the leg lines close to its sides so it reads as trim.
  • The foot points the wrong way. Pick a side before you start the U and swing it all the way out.
  • The patches look flat. Curve each patch line, then add the short stitch marks across it.
  • The red covers the black lines. Go back over the outline with marker once the coloring is done.

Quick answer

Draw a Christmas stocking in 8 easy steps: fluffy cuff, curved foot, stitched heel and toe. An easy project: about 20 minutes. You need 4 things, including black fine point permanent marker and pencil and eraser. The 8 steps start with draw a Bumpy Line Across the Top for the Christmas Stocking Cuff, draw Bumpy Sides Going Up on the Christmas Stocking Cuff, close the Top of the Fluffy Christmas Stocking Cuff and draw Two Lines Down for the Christmas Stocking Leg.

Step-by-step guide

8 steps, about 4 minutes. Tap a picture to jump to that step. Your progress saves automatically.

Tick each step off as you go.

  1. Step 1: Draw a Bumpy Line Across the Top for the Christmas Stocking Cuff

    Watch this step · 0:31

Start near the top of your paper. Draw a bumpy cloud line straight across from the left side to the right side. Some bumps can be little and some can be big. This line is the bottom edge of the fluffy cuff, so leave a little room above it. Make it wide. The cuff sets the size of the whole stocking.

    Tip:

Go slowly. Small, quick bumps look more like fur than big lazy ones.

  2. Step 2: Draw Bumpy Sides Going Up on the Christmas Stocking Cuff

    Watch this step · 0:47

Go back to one end of your bumpy line. Draw more bumps going up on that side. Keep mixing big and small. Then do the same on the other side. Both sides should go up about the same height. Now your cuff looks like a wide bumpy U, open at the top.

    Tip:

Turn your paper if it is hard to draw bumps going up. Your hand likes to curve one way more than the other.

  3. Step 3: Close the Top of the Fluffy Christmas Stocking Cuff

    Watch this step · 1:06

Now connect the two sides across the top with one more bumpy line. Some bumps little, some big, then meet the other side. That closes the shape. You have finished the fluffy part of the stocking. It should look like a puffy cloud or a fuzzy rectangle. Wobbly edges are welcome here.

    Tip:

Let the top bumps point up and the bottom bumps point down. It makes the fur look puffier.

    Back to all steps

  4. Step 4: Draw Two Lines Down for the Christmas Stocking Leg

    Watch this step · 1:27

This is the bottom part of the stocking. From under the cuff, draw a straight line coming down on one side. Then draw another on the other side. Keep them about the same length. They can lean in a little. Leave plenty of room below, because the foot still has to fit on your paper.

    Tip:

Start each line a little inside the cuff edge. That makes the cuff look wider than the sock, like real fur trim.

    Back to all steps

  5. Step 5: Draw the Curved Foot of the Christmas Stocking

    Watch this step · 1:44

On one side, draw a big sideways U. Come out from the bottom of one leg line, curl around and connect back up to the other line. That curve is the foot. It is a fun line to draw, and it is the trickiest one. Yours may look different from the video. That is fine. The point is to have fun.

    Tip:

Make the toe end wider than the heel. It looks more like a real sock.

    Back to all steps

  6. Step 6: Add the Heel and Toe Patches on the Christmas Stocking

    Watch this step · 2:19

Draw a curved line across the front of the foot where the toes are. That makes a toe patch. Then draw another curved line at the back of the foot for the heel. The patches are the parts you color a different color later. Keep them a nice size so they are easy to fill in.

    Tip:

Curve the patch lines toward the end of the foot. A straight line makes the foot look flat.

    Back to all steps

  7. Step 7: Draw Stitch Lines on the Christmas Stocking Heel and Toe

    Watch this step · 2:32

Now add stitching. Draw little short lines across each patch line, all the way along it. Do the toe, then the heel. Space them out evenly. These tiny marks make the patches look sewn on, like a real knitted stocking. When you are done, your Christmas stocking line drawing is finished.

    Tip:

Pause the video here if you want to draw presents or a candy cane poking out of the top.

    Back to all steps

  8. Step 8: Color the Christmas Stocking Red, White and Green

    Watch this step · 3:02

Time to color. Fill the sock part with red. Color the heel and toe patches green. Leave the cuff white, or add a little light blue along its edges so the white fur shows up. The video uses oil pastels, but colored pencils, crayons or markers work too. Add a soft shadow around the outside if you want it to look 3D.

    Tip:

Color the red in one direction. Even strokes look neater than scribbles.
