Essential Knitting Supplies: Beginner's Starter Kit

Updated 2026-05-07

Six items get an absolute beginner from "I bought yarn" to "I just finished my first dishcloth." Here's exactly what to buy, what each one does, and what beginners often overspend on that they don't actually need yet.

1. Worsted weight yarn (medium / category 4)

Smooth, light-colored acrylic in a 100g (3.5oz) skein. Acrylic is forgiving: if you frog and redo a row, the strand doesn't fuzz the way wool does, and the price is right for practice projects.

Recommended: Lion Brand Vanna's Choice Worsted, about $5/skein, in dozens of solid colors. Skip variegated colors at first; visible stitches matter more than aesthetics.

2. Knitting needles size US 8 (5.0mm)

The US 8 / 5mm needle is the standard pairing for worsted yarn. Get straight (single-pointed) needles 10-14 inches long for your first projects; flat scarves don't need circulars yet.

Recommended: Clover Takumi Bamboo US 8, about $7-10 a pair. The bamboo grip prevents stitches sliding off accidentally.

3. Stitch markers (set of 20)

Mark turning points, pattern repeats, and rounds. Stitch markers in knitting are usually closed-ring (slide onto the needle), different from crochet's split-ring style.

Recommended: Closed-Ring Knitting Stitch Markers, about $5 for a 100-pack mix.

4. Tapestry needle (set of 6)

Blunt tip, oversized eye, for weaving in yarn ends without splitting the strand. Metal or plastic both work. They go missing fast; a set keeps you from hunting.

Recommended: Clover Tapestry Needles

5. Small fabric scissors

Anything sharp will do. Scissors are the item beginners most often overspend on; a $5 pair is fine.

Recommended: Generic small fabric scissors

6. Project bag (optional but worth it)

A zippered tote keeps yarn, needles, scissors, and the in-progress project all in one place. You stop losing needles under couch cushions.

Recommended: Knit Picks Mini Project Bag

What you don't need (yet)

Skip these until you've finished a project and know what you actually want:

  • The 18-pair complete needle set. You'll use US 8 for most beginner patterns. Buy specific sizes as patterns demand.
  • Circular and double-pointed needles. Useful for knitting in the round (hats, socks). Useless for your first scarf.
  • Blocking mats and pins. Used to shape finished lacework. Not relevant to a first project.
  • A yarn winder and swift. Worth it once you're buying skeins by the pound. Not for two practice projects.
  • Specialty yarns (cashmere, hand-dyed merino). Practice on $5 acrylic. Save the nice yarn for projects you'll actually wear.

Total starter cost

Yarn ($5) + needles ($8) + markers ($5) + tapestry needles ($4) + scissors ($5) = about $27. Add a $10 project bag if you want it. Under $40 to start, with enough yarn for 2-3 small projects.

Once you have these supplies, the complete beginner's guide walks you through the basic stitches, first projects, and the FAQ that every new knitter hits around hour two.
