Wick tips, a spiral taper, cookie-cutter flowers and burn safety. Easy for beginners.","totalDurationSeconds":483,"difficulty":"easy","tools":["heat gun or hair dryer","craft knife","ruler","craft scissors","cookie cutters (optional)","tongs","small melting pot (optional)"],"materials":["honeycomb beeswax sheets","cotton square braid candle wick","extra beeswax for priming the wick (optional)","baking paper"],"steps":[{"number":1,"title":"Prime the Cotton Candle Wick in Melted Beeswax","text":"Cut a length of cotton wick about an inch longer than your beeswax sheet. Drop it into a pot of melted beeswax and hold it under with tongs. You will see small bubbles rise off the cotton. When the bubbles stop, the wick is full of wax. Lift it out and lay it flat on baking paper to dry. This step is optional, but a waxed wick grips the sheet better."},{"number":2,"title":"Lay the Primed Wick Along the Edge of the Beeswax Sheet","text":"Set a honeycomb beeswax sheet flat on the table. Lay the dry wick along the bottom edge, with a little wick sticking out past each side. Press it gently into the wax with your fingertips so it stays put. If the sheet feels stiff or cracks at the corners, warm it for a few seconds with a hair dryer first. Room temperature in a warm house is usually fine."},{"number":3,"title":"Roll the Beeswax Sheet Tight Around the Wick","text":"Fold the edge of the sheet over the wick and press it down hard. That first turn decides how solid the candle is, so squeeze out any air around the wick. Then keep rolling the beeswax away from you with even pressure across the whole width. Check both ends as you go. If one side starts to run ahead, the candle will come out crooked."},{"number":4,"title":"Warm the Seam of the Rolled Beeswax Candle With a Heat Gun","text":"When you reach the end of the sheet, the loose outer edge needs sealing. Set a heat gun on its lowest setting, or use a hair dryer, and pass it over the seam for no more than five seconds. You are softening the wax, not melting it. If the honeycomb starts to look shiny or wet, stop. Too much heat flattens the pattern."},{"number":5,"title":"Roll the Warm Beeswax Candle to Seal the Seam","text":"Put your palm on the warm candle and roll it back and forth across the table a few times. The softened edge melds into the layer underneath and the seam disappears into the honeycomb. Give it a few more rolls and the candle will not come undone. Trim the wick at the bottom flush with the wax and leave about half an inch at the top."},{"number":6,"title":"Cut the Beeswax Sheet on a Diagonal for a Spiral Taper","text":"For a spiral taper, cut a fresh sheet on an angle. Lay a ruler or the edge of a notepad from one top corner to a point partway down the opposite side, and run a craft knife along it. Lift off the thin wedge. The steeper you make the angle, the bigger the spiral at the top of the candle. Keep the offcut for decorations later."},{"number":7,"title":"Roll the Spiral Beeswax Taper From the Tall Edge","text":"Lay the wick along the tall straight side of the cut sheet, the highest point. Then roll toward the short side the same way as before. Focus on the bottom edge and keep it in a straight line. The top will step down in a curve on its own because of the angle. Seal the seam with a little heat and a few rolls, the same as the pillar."},{"number":8,"title":"Cut Flower Shapes From a Beeswax Sheet With Cookie Cutters","text":"Warm a colored beeswax sheet with the heat gun until it is pliable. Press a cookie cutter straight down into the wax and lift. Plunger cutters, the kind with a little pop-out button, push the shape out cleanly. Sheri cuts flowers and leaves in pink, orange and green. Snowflakes, hearts or Christmas trees work the same way for holiday candles."},{"number":9,"title":"Press the Beeswax Flower Cutouts Onto the Rolled Candle","text":"Pass the heat gun over the candle for a second or two so the surface is tacky. Lay a leaf on first, then press a flower over it with your fingertips. Hold for a few seconds. Add a touch more heat over the top to really seal the shapes down, then repeat down the candle. Layer two colors in one flower for extra depth."}],"recipe":null,"lastUpdated":"2026-10-06T18:52:45.803Z","published":"2026-10-06T18:52:39.468Z","license":"CC BY 4.0.
