No sand. Sand grains are too big to drop into a pinhole, so they bridge across the top and leave the void sitting underneath. A few spoonfuls of cement in a yogurt cup covers a whole statue, so start small.Add water a little at a time until it runs about like heavy cream. Too thick and it smears across the surface without going in. Too thin and it drains back out of the hole before it sets. Work a small area, come back over it from the other direction, then move on. The patch is still green so it cuts away easily, and the block rides on the surrounding surface. Half the pinholes you thought you had filled will reappear. Load the brush from the slurry cup and scrub it over the whole zone in small circles. The circles drive slurry into the holes instead of laying it across the top of them.Wipe the excess back with a damp sponge or the flat of your glove before it sets. What stays behind is a skim that fills the pinholes and lets the surface read as one piece again. Slurry looks darker while wet, so hold off judging the color until the piece dries."},{"number":8,"title":"Step 8: Stop the Bubbles on the Next Pour","text":"Patching is the slow way round. Most air voids come from two things: a mix too stiff to flow, and air clinging to a dry mold wall. Loosen the mix slightly, then brush a thin butter coat of neat cement into the mold and let it grab the detail before the main pour goes in.Pour in thin layers instead of one dump, and vibrate as you go. Tap around the outside of the mold with a rubber mallet, or stand it on a running orbital sander or a washing machine on spin. You will watch the bubbles rise and break.
